GREEN QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Why are we being forced to choose between the economy and the environment? We tend to forget that without an environment we would not have an economy, as everything we consume and I mean everything comes from our environment."

~ Franke James (contemporary artist, photographer, writer)

Greening the Beige is dedicated to improving the quality of Beijing's living environment. Our annual event brings creative people and projects together to celebrate what's "green" in China's capital, while our website helps us to connect all the "green" dots in Beijing and beyond.

GtB is a global collective initiated by Beijingers from China and around the world. So whether disaster strikes in our own backyard or in our neighbor's, it affects us.

Earlier this summer I had the chance to volunteer in Japan through Volunteers For Peace, a US organization that facilitates short to long term work exchanges worldwide. In just the course of two weeks I served a number of roles including child care provider, warehouse supply organizer and farm hand.

The work to rebuild Japan is far from over, and Volunteers For Peace is running exciting new projects this fall focused on disaster relief and networking in affected areas. These special projects are focused on bringing together international and local volunteers to support the ongoing rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts, to increase awareness internationally about the “real picture” of what’s going on in Japan right now, and to build international solidarity.

This unique volunteer opportunity is open to anyone currently living in the US or Canada of any nationality, and definitely open to newcomers! The first deadline is August 18th, but has now been extended through next week, the 25th.
