GREEN QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Why are we being forced to choose between the economy and the environment? We tend to forget that without an environment we would not have an economy, as everything we consume and I mean everything comes from our environment."

~ Franke James (contemporary artist, photographer, writer)

The Race is On!

Awhile back GtB reported on The Great Power Race, a clean energy competition amongst students in China, India, and the US of Awesomeness.

Although, sad to patriotically report, the USA isn't doing nearly as much butt-kicking as India and China!

WOOHOO,GO CHINA, JIA YOU!!! They've more than tripled their competition teams since last reported here. Place your bets...

There’s No Place Like Home

GreenLady C visits The Detroit Dream Temple, January 2009

Dorothy had it right – all you gotta do is click your heels three times…

Over the last 3 years “Greening the Beige” has become a way for me to feel more at home here. It’s a way to bridge art, education, community, communication, and urban healing. It’s a fantastic excuse to bring together everything I enjoy about Beijing, and life in general. In a way, it’s a culmination of all the places I’ve ever called “home”.

Reminder: Trash Doesn't Grow on Trees!

Trash Tree

We are pleased and proud to announce a new volunteer on the GtB team, Kelvin Wang. Coming from a background in design and advertising, Kelvin contributed his skills and talent to creating the poster featured here, helping to illustrate what we like to call everyone's "Rubbish Responsibility".

In addition to urging people not to litter, the poster image is intended to raise a few key questions --

Beijing produces 17,000 tonnes of trash per day...where does it all go?

Can the city's thousands of street sweepers handle the waste of 15 million residents efficiently?

Protect Outdoor Music Festivals ~ 保护户外音乐节

We'd like to salute the organizers for the upcoming Great Wall Tanglewood Music Festival for encouraging everyone to appreciate the environment while they appreciate music.

A few tips to add from GtB:

这个世界不是你的烟灰缸。
如果你吸烟,请带着责任感去尊重环境。请随身携带烟灰缸,并妥善丢弃你的烟蒂。
THE WORLD IS NOT YOUR ASHTRAY.
If you smoke, please be responsible and respectful to the environment. Carry a portable ashtray with you, and dispose of your butts properly.

请关注“1”:
我们只有一个星球,所以请足够的重视它吧。好好照顾它,也就是好好照顾你自己和你关爱的人的生存空间。

Daily Inspiration -- Annie Leonard

Happy Friday!

Earlier this year, one of GtB's big antiwaste heroes and favorite storytellers, Annie Leonard, was interviewed by Brian Frank for Bitch Magazine.

The feature was published just at the release of "The Story of Bottled Water", her latest in a series of digestable, short, animated films that break-down and illustrate the perpetuated waste-cycle of [North American] consumer culture.

BYOC (Bring your own chopsticks!)

Disposable Kuaizi, Photo from Shanghaiist Flickr Pool by Je.T.

"The recent landslides in Gansu, which have racked up a death toll of 1,117 people so far, has gotten the LA Times to ponder the issue of disposable chopsticks. Why? Because apparently, they contribute greatly to the ongoing deforestation and desertification of China, which has been blamed for causing worse floods every year."

Some crazy stats about China's disposable chopsticks usage, from the article and some extra research on The Shanghaiist.

Yummy: Home-Made Soup for the Soul!

DETROIT — The latest must-go event in this gritty, left-behind city — where D.J.’s flourish among ruins, trespassing in tumbledown buildings is part of a night out, and even garage rock is bare-bones — centers on soup.

Green World Cup Results

Well, it appears that AUSTRALIA is the winning country "team" in the GtB Green World Cup series.

And as fate would have it, the winner of the voting contest, Natalaie Jane, happens to be from the Land Down Under, too. Congratulations, Natalie! I'll be in touch soon with how you can redeem your 300 RMB gift certificate from the World Health Store.

Green cheers :-)
