GREEN QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Why are we being forced to choose between the economy and the environment? We tend to forget that without an environment we would not have an economy, as everything we consume and I mean everything comes from our environment."

~ Franke James (contemporary artist, photographer, writer)

Happy New Year of the (Eco) Dragon!

The Eco Dragon by Chris Pilmore (UK)

Just days before Chinese New Year, and already we've spotted a couple of Eco Dragons around the globe. Who knows where they'll turn up next? If YOU come across one, please send word to GtB! We're making it our mission this year to create an online oasis for Eco Dragons the world over to gather @.

The Eco Dragon has emerged from his lair in The Mendip hills to show what can be done using recycled materials.

Ligers, Tiglons, and the Captive Siberian Tiger - Oh my!

Siberian Tiger photo from The Angry Pangolin

I went up north to see an animal that shouldn’t exist: the liger.

A liger is a cross between a male lion and a tigress, and something about the mix of genes makes it grow to an absolutely ridiculous size for a cat. This only happens if the lion is the male and the tiger the female; crossing the genes the other way – with a male tiger and lioness - makes for an extra little cat. Sorry, tiglon. Nobody cares about you.

Calling All Filmmakers (In China) !

Image from "Mayon the Volcano Princess"

Chinese documentaries about the environment do, in fact, exist. "Beijing Besieged" is just one such example. Yet while all of the films at the GtB'5: Green eARTh for Everyone! film fest travel around the world, not a single film focuses on the bold, the beautiful, the bombastic Beijing; or for that matter, any other place in China.

Why is that? Well, you might say:

Hooray for green fashion in Beijing! “以旧换心”慈善跳蚤市场

Global Wake Up Call (Sept 21, 2009) Photo by Doug Lewis

The more we shop, the more we consume, the more pressure we put on the environment and society at large.

So whenever a new clothing swap party, charity benefit sale, new vintage boutique, resale store, or other eco-fashion-find pops up around town -- so do we! With our hands in the air.

A Green Guide to Costuming

Sofia

Looking for costume ideas this All Hallows Eve? Why not turn heads and show off your eco-consciousness at the same time?

GtB highly recommends using the many resources at your disposable rather than buying anything new this year.

Just take it from Sofia (pictured right), who created her classy party dress entirely out of old event fliers.

For those searching for a more macho look, the Eco Action Beijing "Trash Warrior" is a shining example. Literally!

We also recommend getting down and dirty as a Garbage Monster and scaring everyone you come across with your excessive, ugly, waste.

Reduce Reuse Recycle & Repost

What are the incentives for recycling if not financial? Out of Beijing's 20 million residents, how many are taught how to sort their trash? How many realize the importance?

A recent observation on the capital's waste management pilot programs reveals:

In Search of Green Skies

There's something in the air, and it's not pretty. As you can see here from the State Environmental Protection Agency ratings, Beijing is leading the nation right now in poor air quality.

For everyone coming down with the BJ pollution blues, here's a reminder to make sure you're Getting Your Greens.

Happy World Vegetarian Month!

When it comes to delightful dining out, there's no shortage of vegetarian options in Beijing. I just found out -- thanks to LumDimSum -- that Punjabi Indian Restaurant on Lucky Street, near Chaoyang Park West Gate, is offering special vegetarian menus throughout the month of October!
