Background:
•Traditional education makes children behave and think rather stiff and in the same manner, which limits children’s creative thinking ability. They are used to accept existing knowledge but not to realize about their ability to CREATE. This project aims to inspire their potential, foster their consciousness of creativity and to provide them with opportunities to exhibit their talents.
•We believe, children, that are defined the weak, actually have the most original and powerful “Imagination”. Therefore, we encourage the youth to give free rein to their imagination and creativity, to create the most fabulous artworks under the theme of PANDA that receives a lot of attention and love from people. Panda is not only the sign of rare animals but also a sign of China, and what’s more, as loved by all, panda itself is actually a sign of LOVE.
•The word “Loneliness elderly”, “Empty home”, “low-income”, “difficulty” and “live disabled” etc. are mentioned frequently when concerned about the old. The elderly needs help, and in this project children contribute their fortune (creativity and love) to build a warm home for these helpless elders.
•Till the end of 2006,there were up to 7.91 million people aged 65 or over in Henan province, making up 7.6% of the total elderly population. Henan province has the greatest elderly population in China.*
•Henan, as a major agricultural province, The concentration of elderly in rural areas is higher than in cities.*
•The young are moving from rural areas to cities for study and business and finally stay in cities, which increases the percentage of elders in rural areas, and also leads to lack of care for elders.*

•Kaifeng county government from Henan province declares they have around 100 elder orphans there in need of better care and support.
•Kaifeng county government promised to provide with land for construction, and 500 thousand RMB to the house building. Up to now we have received 1.53 million RMB altogether. According to the local construction cost, a home with 80 beds can be built with the money.
•We are still trying to sell children’s works and raise more money, in order to build a larger and better home that could help more elders, and provide better living conditions.

On-Line Carpool Service

On-Line Carpool Service

Contact: Zhang Weiwu zhangweiwu+hitch@realss.com

So what's the big idea?
We are web professionals who want to do a web service for people to share cars by building a carpool website.

Why?
* Because there is a huge demand.
* Traffic jams in Beijing. Commuters suffer.
* People waste their time.
* People's health is in danger: by daily stress (direct), by air pollution (indirect)
* Environment suffers. Carbon emission. People need a solution
* People already practice it. (For example: 顺风哥 )

Car pooling difference between the West and China
* In the West carpooling is mainly used for long distance travel, in china for commuting.
* In the West, focus on saving long distance travel cost. In China, beyond cost, there is also need for comfort and dignity.

Legality
Recently legalized in China

The Pop Bottle Car

Students with plastic bottle work in progress!

THE POP BOTTLE CAR: A collaboration with artist Doug Lewis and the grade 9 students at Canadian International School Beijing.

By Doug Lewis. Chinese Translation by Juliet.

I started working with pop-bottles last year for the sheer enjoyment of it. Truth be know, because they were free and readily available, not because I was making recycling-based art.

My initial idea of pop bottles as ‘pop-art’ created by youth -- the most targeted consumers and future producers of pop culture -- makes the bottles a perfect object-as-metaphor.

I am the middle/high art teacher at CISB where soda pop and popular culture are both a major consumption.

I learned of Greening the Beige last year from a colleague that was involved . I was asked if I was interested in contributing some of my work to their fundraiser.

Last year’s pop-bottle based work taught me to put earth as a perfunctory concern in how I think about art making. Further, that working with my students presented an opportunity that we could explore environmental and cultural issues together.

The Pop Bottle Project showed at Yugong Yishan and CISB students were noted as complete collaborators of the project, as it was their consumption of pop that helped make the work.

The making of this year’s Pop Bottle Car is a work that is in constant progress by students of CISB .

Through their everyday consumption of pop drinks this time, too, but the difference being that the students are collecting, cleaning and designing most everything: all classrooms of the school bring their bottles every morning to the art room.

During lunches detention-recipients (voluntarily) disinfect the pop-bottles, my art students (grade 9 predominantly) form the plastic into car parts by also using bamboo for the architecture.

They will be continuing to do so throughout the 2009/10 year and at year-end, the bottles will be given to someone that can use them for income completing the project.

The students were made aware of specific concepts:

- Pop-art is about popular culture

- Plastics are made by low-grade crude oil, oil not entirely different than what gasoline is made from, thus they both produce green house gas emissions

-Recycling bottles is an artistic form of an advertisement for recycling

- Pop bottles are worth money

-波普艺术是关于流行文化的;

-塑料是由低等原油制成,这种油与汽油提取原料并无本质不同,都能排放温室气体;

-瓶子再循环是在用艺术形式为环保回收做广告;
