GREEN QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Why are we being forced to choose between the economy and the environment? We tend to forget that without an environment we would not have an economy, as everything we consume and I mean everything comes from our environment."

~ Franke James (contemporary artist, photographer, writer)

She also helped design our event poster for the GtB'5 Sustainable Design Showcase. Since Stella's depart from Beijing this summer, she has gone on to become fully certified in permaculture design, and is currently busy at work sculpting and cultivating her plans for the future. Angela is a freelance English translator and interpreter, as well as native-born Beijinger. By joining GtB, she makes use of her language talent, building bridges between eastern and western culture, while at the same time attracting more and more friends from both China and around the world to GtB's greening mission. She's played an active role in the official document translation and GtB’5 theme discussion. Angela hopes she can participate more in GtB in different ways in the near future, to make her contribution to our city’s environment.

Mia Deng – Event Manager

Erin Henshaw - Event Manager & Fundraising Specialist

Erin is from the Washington DC area, so she clearly has a thing for vibrant capital cities! Prior to moving to China, Erin studied Spanish, Sociology and International Business at the University of Virginia and worked in the field of charity event production. She came to China seeking a challenge, and certainly found it. Since arriving in Beijing, she has worked with Harrow International, The Fig Tree and Chi Fan For Charity, and currently serves as the Charity and Corporate Events Manager at The Hutong. She remains active in charity work and events management, and infuses her educational trips and programs with her passions for Chinese tea, healthy living, language-learning and authentic cultural immersion. It's the second year in a row that Erin's helped GtB on its greening mission (the GtB'10 auction event at The Hutong last year was a complete success thanks to her involvement!). GtB was honored to have Erin's superb coordination, enthusiasm, and fundraising finesse for the closing events of GtB'5: Green Earth For Everyone!

(Green Sister Strength)
A great green volunteer in our team, Alice was a student at Beijing No.35 Middle School and a Model United Nations participant that spent time doing extensive research on China’s development issues and their environmental impact. Alice first joined the GtB Team in March 2010, as an Event Manager. This year, she helped translate and circulate an appeal to foster a furry friend, wrote about her interview with the green gardener of Dongzhimen. Alice moved to Canada for her high school senior year in August 2011, yet has continued to help GtB this year by recruiting more young volunteers to get involved for the sake of a greener Beijing.

Liu Yusi - Event Manager & Musician (Green Superstar)

Yusi just arrived in Beijing in summer 2011, after years studying abroad, and quickly became a GtB volunteer, taking a lead role in organizing GtB'5 events from start to finish. Being a musician himself, Yusi is keen on spreading positive "green" messages through artistic activities, which is why GtB attracted Yusi immediately. When he's not greening the city with GtB, you can catch him performing under his self-titled solo project or with Beijing's freshest addition to its music scene, Randy Abel Stable. Yusi served as a key GtB'5 team member this year, working closely with The Veggie Table and Hot Cat Club, to help plan and organize the Green Film Fest and 'Veggie Might', as well as lead us to Mako Live House for the Full Lunar Eclipse Finale.

(Green Eyes)

Sarah applied to become a member of GTB before she even landed in Beijing, on her way over from the UK. She was quickly welcomed into our fold, along with her phenomenal graphic design skills. She is responsible for the making of GTB’s 2010 annual visual theme, as well as creating promotional material for: The Great Green Race, our Feast for Climate Peace on Thanksgiving, and Grand Finale event poster.

Carissa Welton, Founder, Co-Creator, and Advisor (Green Lover)
Carissa holds a B.A. in Humanities/Asian Art Studies from San Francisco State University (signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger!). She fled to China in February 2004, and has been hosting art and music events in the capital since 2006. Her motivation for hosting the first Greening the Beige came from her selection as an installation artist for Burning Man 2007 and researching white pollution in China. Consequently she discovered several artists and community groups in Beijing dedicated to environmental stewardship. The desire to connect her project with these artists in order to make a collective awareness-raising effort developed quite naturally. And what began purely as a labor of love project she intends to develop as an organization that will serve the Beijing community for years to come.
