The Pop Bottle Car
THE POP BOTTLE CAR: A collaboration with artist Doug Lewis and the grade 9 students at Canadian International School Beijing.
By Doug Lewis. Chinese Translation by Juliet.
I started working with pop-bottles last year for the sheer enjoyment of it. Truth be know, because they were free and readily available, not because I was making recycling-based art.
My initial idea of pop bottles as ‘pop-art’ created by youth -- the most targeted consumers and future producers of pop culture -- makes the bottles a perfect object-as-metaphor.
I am the middle/high art teacher at CISB where soda pop and popular culture are both a major consumption.
I learned of Greening the Beige last year from a colleague that was involved . I was asked if I was interested in contributing some of my work to their fundraiser.
Last year’s pop-bottle based work taught me to put earth as a perfunctory concern in how I think about art making. Further, that working with my students presented an opportunity that we could explore environmental and cultural issues together.
The Pop Bottle Project showed at Yugong Yishan and CISB students were noted as complete collaborators of the project, as it was their consumption of pop that helped make the work.
The making of this year’s Pop Bottle Car is a work that is in constant progress by students of CISB .
Through their everyday consumption of pop drinks this time, too, but the difference being that the students are collecting, cleaning and designing most everything: all classrooms of the school bring their bottles every morning to the art room.
During lunches detention-recipients (voluntarily) disinfect the pop-bottles, my art students (grade 9 predominantly) form the plastic into car parts by also using bamboo for the architecture.
They will be continuing to do so throughout the 2009/10 year and at year-end, the bottles will be given to someone that can use them for income completing the project.
The students were made aware of specific concepts:
- Pop-art is about popular culture
- Plastics are made by low-grade crude oil, oil not entirely different than what gasoline is made from, thus they both produce green house gas emissions
-Recycling bottles is an artistic form of an advertisement for recycling
- Pop bottles are worth money
-波普艺术是关于流行文化的;
-塑料是由低等原油制成,这种油与汽油提取原料并无本质不同,都能排放温室气体;
-瓶子再循环是在用艺术形式为环保回收做广告;
