Green Earth Volunteers, one of China’s oldest environmental NGOs, is looking for a volunteer to help write the China Environment Brief.
The Brief is a summary of major environmental news in China distributed by e-mail to a wide range of scholars, journalists, and environmental professionals from over 15 countries, and uploaded onto our website. It is currently written by four people and comes out two times a week. The writer collects 4-5 of the most important environmental news stories published in the previous few days on Chinese language sites like Sina, People's Net, and individual newspaper sites, and then writes a very brief one or two paragraph summary for each story. After adding links to environmental stories from the major English-language news sites in China (Xinhua, China Daily, Caixin, Shanghai Daily, etc.), then the writer sends out the Brief by e-mail to a growing list of people concerned with China's environment. From research to completion, the entire process typically takes 4-6 hours. You can check out past editions of the brief on our website under the ‘Latest News’ section: eng.greensos.cn
About the Position:
1) Start date: mid/late January
2) The position is part-time, at most you will send out the brief
roughly once every week to two weeks
3) The work can be tailored to your schedule on the day and done from
the comfort of your own home, or favorite WiFi-equipped coffee shop
anywhere. Preference to those based in China.
4) This is a volunteer position
Requirements:
1) Ability to commit to a relatively consistent schedule for writing
the briefs. Some flexibility is possible, but during most weeks the
writer will be assigned a day on which to write the brief and must be
able to keep to that schedule.
2) Native or near native English language skills. The writer will also
be responsible for editing his/her summaries, so it is imperative that
he/she have very good command of English language.
3) Strong editing and writing skills.
4) Strong enough Chinese reading skills to be comfortable reading and
summarizing Chinese news articles. We welcome high level
students of Chinese, in fact writing the briefs is a great way to
practice your Chinese 阅读.
5) Experience working in the Chinese environmental sector is a plus,
but writing the brief is also a good motivation to familiarize
yourself with the environmental situation in China.
Those interested, please send a very brief introductory
letter and CV to cgnvolunteers@gmail.com within the next
two weeks. If you have questions, please also feel free to send them
to the same address.
