Will Beijing’s Blue Skies Turn Gray This Year?

In a presentation before Beijing’s municipal legislature Monday, Mayor Guo Jinlong said that this year’s target for days with good or excellent air quality will be 73%. That works out to 266 days—19 days below the actual number of 285 so-called “blue skies” reached last year.

Beijing is aiming for 73% blue sky days this year.
But residents of the capital need not get too gloomy about his forecast: the target doesn’t necessarily represent a retreat.
In fact, Beijing consistently low-balls predictions. Last year’s blue-sky target was 71%, or 259 days, well below the actual number of blue days. This year’s prediction falls in line with that trend...
