JISU PK & Lecture on global bicycle culture this Saturday night
Join us this Saturday night for a talk and some indoor bike racing!
JISU PK
STC (www.stcbj.com) presents China's first ever Jisu PK event this weekend at the Charity Share Bar in the Number 46 Fangjia Hutong Art District.
So what is JISU PK ? JISU PK is a fun indoor bicycle event where 2 competitors on bikes attached to stationary rollers race each other in front of a cheering crowd. Typically a race last only 30 seconds and the winner is the rider that covers the set distance the quickest. The progress of the race is projected on the big screen so the crowd can get behind its favourite rider. Challenge your friend to a race, race your colleague, race someone from another country, hey you can even race your Grandparents (but be prepared to for them to kick your arse as they probably still ride their bikes everyday !).
This style of roller racing has a long history going back to the beginning of cycle racing in Europe and America. Our event will be a fun and social evening and we will encourage anyone and everyone to get up and have a go. Over the course of the night we will record the fastest times and at the end of the evening the fastest riders will have a "ride off". The final "ride off" between the last 2 male and female riders will crown China's first JISU PK " King" and "Queen" ! We will also have a series of handicap races giving everyone a chance to win.
ANTHONY SIRACUSA
Before the JISU PK begins there will be a talk on Global Bicycle Culture by Anthony Siracusa. This is presented by FON (Friends of Nature) www.fonchina.org. FON is the oldest environmental NGO in China and has been undertaking some excellent work in Beijing developing and promoting bicycle commuting policy.
Anthony will talk on the following ;
The bicycle, still an infant within the trajectory of human civilization, has never been more important to urban society. With the specters of climate change, dwindling resources, and overcrowding posing a challenge to both policy makers and citizens, our civilization depends on sustainable solutions. And though simple in design, the bicycle is profound in it's ability to address many of our most complicated challenges.
Anthony Siracusa has spent 9 months traveling studying the way the bicycle affects major cities. Focusing on how urban design, cultural factors, and how personal incentives grow strong bicycle cultures, Siracusa will share policy and advocacy insight, and personal experience from the bicycle cultures in Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia and China.
Anthony Siracusa is a 2009-2010 Thomas J. Watson fellow traveling the world on a project to understand global bicycling cultures. He is the founder of Revolutions Community Bicycle Shop in Memphis, Tennessee and author of the "Pedal Power" blog found at www.anthonysiracusa.blogspot.com

About FON:
Friends of Nature (FON) is the oldest environmental NGO in China. We have been working for over 15 years to promote environmental awareness about China’s most pressing environmental problems. In particular, we have focused on protecting endangered species such as the Tibetan antelope and the snub-nosed monkey; environmental education through camps, field trips, and most importantly, teacher-training; and awareness-raising campaigns such as photo exhibitions and publications. Though we have achieved some important victories for nature, possibly FON’s greatest achievement is helping to foster a growing network of grassroots environmental NGOs throughout China. We firmly believe that environmental education increases awareness, and awareness increases citizen participation. It is through the participation of all Chinese citizens that China can achieve the dream of an environmentally harmonious society.
For more information about our organization, our various activities and campaigns, and ways that you can contribute to China’s environmentally sustainable development, please explore our English and Chinese websites. Descriptions of our activities are organized by both theme and by year. There are various ways to contribute to FON and the environmentally sustainable development of China, including hiking and birdwatching clubs. If you have any questions about our activities or how you can help ensure the protection of nature for future generations, please feel free to contact us. We look forward to hearing from you!
About STC:
STC (Smarter Than Car) is a Beijing based group which promotes the use of the bicycle in Beijing. With car ownership in the city going through the roof and the subsequent traffic congestion there has never been a better time to get on the bike and move around the city faster and with more freedom. Our group aims to promote cycling in the city as an enjoyable, healthy and sustainable activity and a much smarter alternative to driving a car or taking taxis.
We will shortly be launching a website and a regular newsletter with our planned events and tips on cycling in Beijing. If you are interested please sign up to our newsletter by emailing your name to us on subscribe@stcbj.com.
Anthony Siracusa
此活动由FON(自然之友) www.fonchina.org 主办。
