# THE BIG CHANGE
Three projects explore how the city can go GREEN, GRASSROOTS and GENETIC!
Innovative forms of collective engagement, long-term integrated strategies and sheer computer power offer urban sustainability fresh opportunities.
This month's projects introduce incentives and ideas that start to break down the brutal top-down market-driven planning of the contemporary Chinese city.
The goal: a hybrid of large-scale and intricate development, of embedded technology and natural systems, of rigid green boundaries and continuously evolving urban spaces.

# FROM GENERIC TO GENETIC CITY
Following the exhibition opening 'GENETIC CITY' in the Dutch Culture Centre in Shanghai, DCF will host a day-long forum of 30 leading minds in the field of urban planning.
The exhibition presents the proposal for Caofeidian Ecocity for which DCF invited 10 prominent offices in collaboration. The result is a unique design simulating thirty years of sustainable urban expansion planned in relay, one on top of the other. The city as an accumulation of evolving ideas.
GREEN FROM SCRATCH is a debate responding to the proposals. In an eight hour discussion the forum traces this design process and debates how current policies should be adapted to embrace real urban sustainability.
August 15, 10am-6pm, Dutch Culture Centre, Changde Lu 800.

# CONFERENCE DESIGNING THE HYBRID CITY
Todays' cities are no longer limited to the experience of physical spaces. Media technologies influence the way city dwellers organise their everyday life as well as their social interactions. Consequently, cities are now understood as ‘Cybercities’, ‘Sentient Cities’, or ‘Hybrid Cities’. But how do we design for Hybrid Cities and lifestyles?
We invite all professionals involved in the shaping of the 21st-century city to join us on August 16-17th 2010 in Shanghai. Whether you are a city planner, architect, researcher, artist, or interface designer.
Keynotes include: Aaron Tan (Rad), MIT Senseable City Lab, Jack Qiu, Isaac Mao, Caroline Bos (UNStudio), Anne Nigten (The Patching Zone), Christian van 't Hof (Rathenau Institute), Li Zhenhua (Laboratory Art Beijing, Shanghai eArts), XML Architecture and Space&Matter Architects.
