Hello Green Beijingers!
Thank you for your support for last week’s Greening The Beige Earth Hour event at Club Obiwan on March 28. It was a complete success with many new and familiar faces attending. The night started off with some live music as the lights went dark basking the bar only in candlelight. After everyone talked and got to know each other better, a rousing game of green trivia pub quiz got everyone thinking green. Questions went from easy (which season in Beijing has sandstorms?) to hard (what was the API pollution level in Beijing on Friday March 27?). The winner of the night’s quiz was team Soap Nuts who walked away with a fresh pitcher of sangria. For those of you who don’t know, team Soap Nuts took their name from a small nut that has been used for washing for thousands of years, especially by Native Americans. They are great for the environment and completely biodegradable.
After the quiz the lights came back on and were entrained by some outside fire spinning by a new member of GtB. All in all, it was an excellent and entertaining event for all. This was the first of many events for the GtB 2009. We’re just getting started!
We were thrilled with the new members who came to the event on Saturday and pledged their time and effort for a greener Beijing. After reviewing the GtB mission and previewing plans for our 3rd annual event, we had a chance to break into committee groups and get to know each other. Please welcome the following new folks listed below, along with the committees they'll begin to work on:

Laura Simei, Julien Chol, and Tanya Davies also came out in time for the Earth Hour Party. Plus Joe, the amazing fire spinner from the Beijing Jugglers & Mr. Tavey Marley, one GtB's most prized unplugged troubadours.
Our very special and surprise guest, Dr. Eva Sternfeld, former director of CESDRRC (China Environment & Sustainable Reference & Research Centre) enlightened us with her presence and acted as the judge for our Green Trivia Game (YAY GO SOAPNUTS!!!). In case you didn't know, Dr. Sternfeld is an expert on water management in China and was the keynote speaker at the 1st Greening the Beige event in May 2007. We were lucky to have her join us for Earth Hour last Saturday, just before her return to the Berlin Institute of Technology.
Thanks again for all those who attended and those who turned off their lights for an hour last Saturday to do their part to raise environmental awareness. If you could not attend the event last week, there is more to come and we hope to see you at a later event.
On Earth Day, April 22, GtB will be having an outdoor BBQ on the rooftop of Obiwan. With the weather warming up, it should be great weather for some food and drinks with your fellow green friends. So, mark your calendars and stay tuned for more information and fliers.
Again, thanks for attending and we hope to see you all again on Earth Day!
