Countdown to Copenhagen
Beijing is home to many of the most important NGOs currently pushing for action on Climate Change. This week, one of the foremost NGOs is launching it's campaign to get China ready for Copenhagen. Read more and find out how you can help.
May 3rd saw the beginning a streak of 5 days measuring in at over 22 Degrees in Beijing. This is the earliest ever such occurrence in the capital, and further confirmation that we are facing a Climate crisis.
So Beijing is getting very hot very early. This is good for the rooftop bar and open-toe sandals industries, but it also brings evidence to some of the gravest warnings we have been receiving for decades. But are there any positives? Is there any hope? Is it worth investing in open-toe sandal production companies?
In this rising heat and the aroma of cheesy feet wafting up from sandals everywhere, one of the most important NGOs functioning in Beijing is launching its English Countdown to Copenhagen website. Inviting users to learn more about our Climate Crisis and giving them the low down on the Copenhagen talks.
What are these Copenhagen talks? Who are these NGO heroes you speak of?
Good questions. Well, we all heard a lot about the Kyoto agreement. This mainly drew controversy because of the US and China’s failure to commit to any radical emissions-curbing policy. Copenhagen, taking place in December, is the follow on from those talks. It marks the world’s most vital chance to avert the oncoming climate crisis and take radical measures.
With so much at stake, thankfully, Greenpeace China is lobbying the government on behalf of the people in order to ensure that public views on climate change are well represented. A very important part of lobbying governments is allowing the general public (that’s us) to express their opinions and have their say on important issues. In order to do this, Greenpeace China has this week launched it’s Countdown to Copenhagen'campaign English language mini-site.
Fitted with exciting news stories, informative blog entries and hot men in showers, this site has been set up to give people access all sorts of other exciting content as the world’s most important climate meeting approaches. Check this website now and learn more about the issues being discussed.
If everyone starts talking about the issues and making wide spread concern a reality, political change can come. So this weekend, don’t talk about the poor service you received in your local hotpot restaurant, talk about how your home city increasingly resembles a hot pot restaurant and how world leaders need to make a change.
If all goes well, the world could start getting cooler, and before you ask, it will never be ok to wear socks with sandals – so don’t go investing just yet: There is hope.
